In celebration of upcoming Valentine’s Day, Canteen’s on-staff nutritionists helped us put together a list of foods, many of which can be found in our vending machines, micro-markets, and refreshment services snack offering that offer nutrients that can help boost heart health.
Many people aiming to improve their heart health make the mistake of cutting fat entirely out of their diets, when in fact, including more of certain types of fats in your diet is actually important for cardiovascular wellbeing. “Good fats,” which include monounsaturated fats, omega-3s and other polyunsaturated fats, are very important to heart health. These good fats can be found in foods like nuts, avocados, and fatty fish, and have been associated with lowered rates of heart disease. In addition to healthy fats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains provide additional nutrients that offer many benefits to your heart and health overall.
Some of our favorite heart smart foods include:
- Nuts, especially almonds and walnuts (Omega 3, mono and other polyunsaturated fats)
- Dark Chocolate (70% or higher cocoa content)
- Tea (especially green tea, or others containing catechins and flavonoids)
- Olive oil
- Black/Kidney Beans
- Sweet Potato
- Red Bell Peppers
Look for products containing these foods in any of Canteen’s vending offerings, especially our micro-markets or Choice Plus better-for-you vending solutions. For example, snack on trail mix or a granola bar containing almonds or walnuts, opt for a salad or fruit pack from one of our Avenue C micro-markets, or have hot oatmeal and tea for breakfast if your office has a Canteen refreshment services program.
