Earlier this month, Canteen’s Mid South Division supported Camp SOAR (Special Olympics Athletic Retreat) for the 14th year. Held at the Levine Jewish Community Center in Charlotte, this weeklong camp for over 300 children and adults with disabilities is provided to participants free of charge thanks to generous donations and over 150 volunteers who help operate the camp each day. Canteen’s Mid South Division associates deliver fresh lunches, snacks and drinks for the camp daily. Canteen’s supplier partners donated snacks and beverages for the campers as well. Additionally, many associates and supplier partners spent the week volunteering their time to assist with serving meals and helping campers.
Dawn Huwe, Director of Marketing and Division Support for the Mid South, coordinates Canteen and supplier partner volunteers. “It is an honor and privilege to help organize this special event each year. The camp creates exciting and meaningful experiences for the campers, and I believe the interaction between volunteers and campers has positive life-changing effects on both groups.”
Bob Bowler, founder and director of the camp, had this to say: “Canteen’s involvement is critical to the success of the camp and makes such a big difference to so many.”
