Savor the Flavor

Savor the Flavor

March is National Nutrition Month and we’ve got tons of suggestions on how to follow this initiative! The most important part about this year’s theme is eating better-for-you foods without losing an ounce of flavor. Here’s how you can do that:

More fruits and vegetables

Every variety of fruits or vegetables offers at least one, if not more, crucial nutrients that we need to keep our bodies going! These are some ways to bring more fruits and veggies into your diet:

  • Add fruit to your breakfast selection (oatmeal, whole grain waffles, cold cereal, etc.)
  • Opt for a side of roasted veggies instead of a starch

More whole grains

Eating whole grains is a great way to add fiber, protein, and other important nutrients to your diet. Here are some ideas that you can incorporate while at home, in the workplace, or in transit:

  • Switch to whole grain breads and rice
  • Select soups with wild rice or barley

Increase your flavor

Don’t forget to kick up your flavor with herbs and spices! When eating healthier, there’s no need to sacrifice the flavor factor.  Experiment with as many herbs and spices as you can find to add a kick to your new favorite recipes!  Here’s a start:

  • Sprinkle cinnamon onto your whole grain breakfast foods
  • Add rosemary into your savory soups
  • You can even add cayenne pepper to your popcorn
