What You Didn’t Know about Memorial Day

5.27NewsfeedPost

Memorial Day is a holiday established to honor our fallen soldiers who bravely defended our country’s freedom. To mark the occasion, many will hold celebrations, volunteer at local veteran non-profits, or even spend time with friends and family at a cookout. These are all things that come to mind when hear that Memorial Day is coming up, but here are some facts you may not have known about this commemorative holiday:

  • The National Moment of Remembrance occurs at 3 PM (local time) on Memorial Day. That time was selected because “3 PM is the time when most Americans are enjoying their freedoms on the national holiday.”
  • Memorial Day Weekend falls on the last Monday of May, which also happens to be during National Barbecue Month and National Hamburger Month. So, it comes as no surprise that it’s the single most popular day to eat beef in the United States!
  • Every year, starting on Memorial Day, Americans consume over 70 million hot dogs a day. That boils down to 818 hot dogs per second.
  • Memorial Day is the 2nd most popular day for barbequing, second only to the 4th of July.

On this holiday, we would like to take the time to remember those who fought for our nation. On behalf of all of us at Canteen, we are grateful for your service.
